The Economic and Social Research Council’’s (ESRC), a center in UK associated with the University of Leeds and the London School of Economics has made new calculations of the total green house gas emissions by year 2012, and the findings are a reduction caused by the present recession and financial crisis. According to the calculations the total emissions will be 9% lower than expected.
The 9% reduction is of course good news. However, there is a risk that the present lack of financial possibilities will slow down the willingness to make ‘green investments’ that otherwise would be made. But even worse is the risk that many return to ‘business as usual’ when the financial crisis is over.

In order to stop the world wide emission of greenhouse gasses then large investments have to be made now.
It is not good enough to express nice intentions in political speeches, the bill cannot be paid by words. The USA and the European countries can pay their own bill, it is only a question whether they are willing to do so.
It is a different situation for developing countries! It is not possible for them to continue the necessary development without some increase of CO2 emission, but the additional emission of CO2 and other greenhouse gasses should of course be kept to a minimum. This sustainable development cost extra money, and it is only fair that this is paid by the industrialized countries.
At a recent summit in Brussels the European Union has agreed to help the developing countries with this extra investment; at the Copenhagen Climate Meeting in December 2009, EU will propose that the developing countries receives annually 100 billion euro in order to make it possible for the developing countries to participate in the total reduction of CO2.
However, it remains to be seen whether this is enough, and in particular whether the USA and the European countries at the same are willing to make considerable reductions of their own CO2 emissions.
